]]>These scholarships offer more than financial support—they enable recipients to access new opportunities and reinforce Phi Delta Theta’s values of Friendship, Sound Learning, and Rectitude. Looking ahead, we hope to grow these scholarships even further as part of Campaign 2030: A Greater Version for Tomorrow, expanding our impact and providing even more members with resources to thrive and succeed.
Each of these awards represents more than just a dollar amount—they’re a reflection of the Fraternity’s deep commitment to building future leaders. From first-generation students to student-athletes and chapter officers, this year’s 519 recipients represent 133 different chapters across North America — a powerful testament to the widespread impact of the scholarship program.
As we look to the future, the Phi Delta Theta Foundation is committed to growing these programs and reaching even more deserving students. Together, we are building a stronger, smarter, and more service-minded brotherhood.
This year’s impact spanned academic disciplines, leadership roles, and campus involvement. From first-generation college students to chapter presidents, the stories behind each recipient reflect the depth of character and potential within our brotherhood.
One recipient expressed the meaningful connection between scholarship and Fraternity values, writing:
“Being a member of Phi Delta Theta has been one of the most meaningful parts of my college experience. The values of friendship, sound learning, and rectitude resonate deeply with me. It is truly humbling to be connected to Jordan L. Haines’s legacy through this scholarship.”
Andrew Jamail, Kansas ‘27
Another shared how donor support provided critical financial relief:
“The Proud to be a Missouri Alpha Phi Scholarship has completely opened new opportunities for me and has alleviated my financial burdens. This scholarship gives me the liberty to focus on my academic goals and curricular involvement, and I cannot say thank you enough.”
Baylor Adamovsky, Missouri ‘27
Still another recipient reflected on how support fuels personal growth and leadership:
“As a proud member of Phi Delta Theta at the University of Puget Sound, I have been fortunate to grow as a student, athlete, leader, and brother—especially this last year being on the executive team as Treasurer. Your investment in students like me is a powerful reminder of the lifelong impact that alumni and supporters have on our Fraternity’s future.”

]]>For James C. Eskridge, the values of leadership, service, and integrity have been lifelong companions. From his early days in Pasadena, Texas, where he earned the Eagle Scout Award in 1961, to his distinguished career in youth development and military service, Brother Eskridge has consistently embodied the ideals of Phi Delta Theta.
Now celebrating fifty consecutive years of giving to the Phi Delta Theta Foundation, Eskridge’s story is one of enduring commitment. His first donation came in 1975, and over the decades, his contributions have included a Charitable Gift Annuity for The Living Bond Society, memorabilia for the Foundation archives, and commemorative bricks in the Sesquicentennial Courtyard—honoring both his own journey and the memory of fellow brothers.
“My support of the Foundation is a sound investment in the future of Phi Delta Theta,” Eskridge shares. “It ensures scholarships, fellowships, educational programs, and housing grants that shape tomorrow’s leaders.”
Eskridge’s Phi Delt journey began in 1964 at Lamar University, where he joined the Delta Rho Colony. He played a pivotal role in the installation of the Texas Iota Chapter in 1965, serving first as vice president and then as president. His leadership continued beyond college, through active participation in alumni clubs, Founders Day events across multiple states, and the 2018 Biennial Convention in San Antonio.
A proud Golden Legionnaire, Eskridge received his pin in 2015 at a Founders Day event in Seattle. Reflecting on the moment, he recalls signing The Bond of Phi Delta Theta in 1965 and later organizing a Golden Legion ceremony for fellow brothers during the Texas Iota Chapter Reunion in 2018.
His professional life is equally distinguished. Eskridge served in the U.S. Air Force from 1967 to 1974, specializing in Aerospace Reconnaissance Intelligence Operations, with assignments in Vietnam, Germany, and at Strategic Air Command Headquarters. He earned two USAF Commendation Medals for Meritorious Service.
Following his military service, Eskridge dedicated thirty-four years to Scouting America, serving in executive roles across the country and retiring in 2008 as associate director for Compensation and Benefits at the BSA National Council.
He met his future wife, Kathryn, at college, and soon she accepted his fraternity drop. They married after graduation and will celebrate their sixtieth wedding anniversary in 2026. They reside near Seattle, Washington, as do their son, daughter-in-law, and two granddaughters
Through it all, Phi Delta Theta remained a constant. “Robert Morrison said, ‘To do what ought to be done, but would not have been done unless I did it, I thought to be my duty.’ That principle has guided me throughout my life,” Eskridge reflects.
His advice to future leaders is simple yet profound: “Lead by example. Integrity and consistency between words and deeds are the foundation of true leadership.”
James C. Eskridge’s legacy is a testament to the power of living The Bond. His half-century of generosity and service continues to inspire, ensuring that Phi Delta Theta remains a force for good in the lives of generations to come.

]]>The post Amplify Your Impact: Why IRAs and Donor-Advised Funds Are Powerful Tools for Giving to the Phi Delta Theta Foundation appeared first on Phi Delta Theta.
]]>For donors aged 70½ or older, IRAs offer another powerful way to support the Phi Delta Theta Foundation. Through a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD), you can transfer up to $108,000 per year directly from your IRA to a qualified charity—tax-free.
Why Give Through Your IRA?
A Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) is a charitable giving account administered by a public charity, designed to help individuals, families, or organizations manage their donations efficiently. Think of a DAF as an investment account for philanthropy: you contribute cash, stocks, or other assets, receive an immediate tax deduction, and then recommend grants to nonprofits over time. Your investment grows tax-free, allowing you to make a lasting impact.
DAFs are on the rise—Fidelity Charitable alone distributed $11.8 billion in gifts through DAFs in 2023, an 18 percent increase over the previous year. The number of DAFs has nearly tripled in the past decade, making them the fastest-growing philanthropic vehicle in the US.
Why Use a DAF?
Who Uses DAFs?
DAF donors are typically financially savvy individuals who value strategic planning and maximizing their philanthropic experience. The median DAF account balance is less than $20,000. Increasingly, younger generations are opening DAFs, making this a tool for donors of all ages.
The Phi Delta Theta Foundation is dedicated to strengthening men for life by building on the core values of Friendship, Sound Learning, and Rectitude. The Foundation grants over $1 million annually in scholarships, fellowships, and educational grants, supporting leadership development, health and safety initiatives, and member support through its ambitious Campaign 2030: A Greater Version for Tomorrow.
Your gift—whether through a DAF or IRA—helps sustain these programs and empowers future generations of Phi Delts to achieve personal greatness. The Foundation accepts contributions through DAFs, IRA rollovers, matching gifts, and estate planning arrangements, making it easy for you to choose the giving method that best fits your financial goals.
The Phi Delta Theta Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization with nonprofit status. Our Tax ID number is 34-6539803.
By leveraging Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) and Donor-Advised Funds (DAFs), you can make a strategic, tax-efficient gift that supports the mission of Phi Delta Theta for years to come. Join thousands of donors who are building a greater version for tomorrow—your generosity will help shape the future of our brotherhood.

]]>Tio and Janell Kleberg, known for their unwavering dedication to the Phi Delta Theta Foundation, have deepened their legacy with a second, transformative $1 million gift in 2025. As co-chairs of Campaign 2030, the Klebergs’ generosity is not only a testament to their lifelong commitment to principled leadership but also a harbinger of their vision for the future—one centered on empowering generations of young men to grow as ethical, courageous, and visionary leaders.
This new $1 million gift is the first step to doubling the reach of the Kleberg Emerging Leaders Institute, allowing up to 2,000 students to benefit from life-changing leadership development opportunities each year. The Klebergs’ stewardship ensures the Institute remains a cornerstone of the Fraternity’s mission, broadening its impact while nurturing a culture of giving and personal growth.

The Klebergs’ philanthropic journey began in 1969, when Tio, then a new alumnus, contributed his first $10 to the Foundation. Over the decades, Tio and Janell’s steadfast support has inspired countless others to contribute, demonstrating that generosity—no matter the amount—can create lasting change. Their influence as role models extends beyond their financial gifts, as they have championed scholarships, leadership programs, and Fraternity initiatives that empower thousands of students to pursue academic and personal excellence.

In 2012, Tio and Janell’s historic first $1 million gift led to the renaming of the Emerging Leaders Institute in their honor, establishing a tradition of visionary support. Four years later, they continued their commitment with a $100,000 contribution to the Leadership and Ethics Academy. Now, their second $1 million gift marks a new chapter—one that exemplifies stewardship and a promise to expand opportunities for future leaders.
As co-chairs of Campaign 2030, the Klebergs are guiding the Fraternity toward its future with clarity and conviction. Their vision is inclusive: “This campaign isn’t just for major donors—it’s for every Phi. Legacy matters. The most meaningful part of this campaign is that it’s not about us—it’s about those who come next,” Tio shared, reflecting their belief in the power of collective action and the enduring value of leadership formation.

The Klebergs’ leadership and philanthropy have set the pace for Campaign 2030. Their most recent gift is a catalyst, inspiring others to join in shaping Phi Delta Theta’s future. As the campaign gains momentum, the Klebergs’ vision and generosity ensure that the Kleberg Emerging Leaders Institute will remain at the heart of the Fraternity’s mission—preparing ethical leaders to serve, innovate, and lead for generations to come.
The Campaign’s goal is to position the Phi Delta Theta Foundation as the leading Fraternity Foundation in member impact—measured by the highest annual grant distributions and the meaningful support we provide to enrich the lives of our brothers.

Mike Fimiani, Tio Kleberg, and Kenny Jastrow at the Campaign 2030 Midpoint Luncheon in Atlanta, Georgia.
Launched with a vision to raise $30 million by the year 2030, Campaign 2030 has already achieved remarkable milestones. Under the strategic guidance of founding Chair Kenny Jastrow and Vice Chair Mike Fimiani, the campaign has raised over $20 million to date. These funds have fueled transformational growth across the Fraternity, including the creation of forty-three new scholarships and chapter leadership funds, the awarding of $1 million in first-generation student scholarships, and the expansion of leadership development programs like the Kleberg Emerging Leaders Institute.
At the recent Campaign 2030 Midpoint Luncheon, the Phi Delta Theta Foundation honored Jastrow and Fimiani for their visionary leadership. Their tenure laid the foundation for a campaign that is not only redefining what it means to be a Phi but also positioning the Fraternity to be recognized as a national leader in service-based leadership development.

Tio and Janell Kleberg, longtime champions of leadership education and the namesakes of the Kleberg Emerging Leaders Institute, become co-chairs of Campaign 2030.
As the campaign enters its second half, leadership transitions to a new team with deep roots in Phi Delta Theta and a shared passion for its future. Tio and Janell Kleberg, longtime champions of leadership education and the namesakes of the Kleberg Emerging Leaders Institute, now serve as co-chairs, joined by their son, Chris Kleberg, as vice chair. Their appointment signals a renewed commitment to expanding the campaign’s reach and impact.
“Our goal is to ensure that every young man who joins Phi Delta Theta has the opportunity to grow into a principled leader. This next chapter is about legacy—about building something enduring for the generations to come. And it’s not just about major gifts—every Phi can participate, no matter the amount. Every contribution helps shape the future.” said Tio Kleberg.
“Phi Delta Theta has a profound impact not only on young men but on their families and communities. We believe in supporting the kind of leadership that lasts a lifetime and creates ripple effects far beyond the college years.” added Janell Kleberg.
Reflecting on the leadership transition, Foundation President Sean Wagner shared, “We are deeply grateful to Kenny and Mike for their extraordinary leadership and vision in launching Campaign 2030. Their efforts have laid a powerful foundation. As we welcome Tio, Janell, and Chris into their new roles, we are energized by their passion and commitment to shaping the future of Phi Delta Theta. The second half of this campaign promises to be just as transformative.”

Tio Kleberg, Texas Tech ’69
The next phase of Campaign 2030 will focus on scaling successful initiatives and launching new ones. Priorities include expanding in-person leadership programs like the Kleberg Emerging Leaders Institute and McKenzie Family Presidents Leadership Conference, enhancing curriculum, and increasing accessibility through scholarships and travel assistance. The campaign will also expand mental health and wellness programming, strengthen risk management and anti-hazing education, and increase scholarship support to meet the rising cost of higher education. The strategic roadmap includes educating 2,500 members in person annually, awarding $2 million in scholarships and leadership funding, and building a sustainable Phi Delt Fund that generates $1 million annually. All of this with the ultimate goal of positioning the Phi Delta Theta Foundation as the leading Fraternity Foundation in member impact—measured by the highest annual grant distributions and the meaningful support we provide to enrich the lives of our brothers.
With momentum strong and a new leadership team in place, Campaign 2030 is poised to finish even stronger than it began.

The Phi Delta Theta Foundation has achieved an unprecedented milestone, a record Phi Delt Fund year while awarding over $1 million. This oustanding achievement underscores the dedication of our alumni, friends, and supporters in advancing the Foundation’s mission of fostering leadership, scholarship, and lifelong brotherhood.
A Historic Donation
In an impactful beginning to the year, the Foundation received its third seven-figure donation from a living donor and the fourth in its history. Shirley and Mark Craig, Colorado State ’71, (pictured above) made this transformational gift, further solidifying the Foundation’s ability to provide scholarships, leadership development programs, and resources for its members.
A Record-Breaking Giving Day
The 2024 Giving Day was the largest in the Foundation’s history, driven by remarkable participation across chapters and divisions. Alumni engagement reached new heights, and the competition among chapters resulted in significant leadership fund awards.
Interfraternal Giving Tuesday Champions
For the second consecutive year, the Phi Delta Theta Foundation has proudly retained the title of Interfraternal Giving Tuesday Champion. The Foundation’s efforts outpaced other prominent fraternities, including PIKE, Sigma Chi, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, and Alpha Gamma Rho. This victory highlights the strength of our brotherhood and the unwavering commitment of Phi Delt alumni to supporting the mission of the Foundation.
A Vision for the Future
This record-breaking year is more than just a celebration of the past—it’s a launchpad for the future. In 2024, the Foundation had its most significant impact year yet, awarding more in scholarships and grant dollars than ever before. With the incredible momentum generated by this year’s fundraising success, we look forward to 2025 being another record year of support for our students.
As we reflect on this historic achievement, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to every donor, alumnus, and supporter who contributed to this year’s success. Together, we are building a brighter future for our members, our chapters, and the communities we serve.

$1.7 Million Educational Dollars Granted

The Phi Delta Theta Foundation aims to support every chapter and every Phi possible. Over the past twenty-five years, its reach has grown dramatically. Like most organizations, it experienced a setback during the 2008 recession; however, thanks to the diligence of the Phi Delta Theta Foundation Board of Trustees, the Foundation continued awarding scholarships. Today, the Foundation gives out $600,000 annually to more chapters than ever. As we look ahead to the second half of Campaign 2030: A Greater Version for Tomorrow, we’re proud of our success during the first five years of the campaign and now turn our attention to increasing the number of scholarships available to Phi Delt nation to help offset the rising cost of education.

“With less worry placed on finances, I was able to be a part of our executive board last year as philanthropy chair, as well as joining a school competition for my major where we compete against other schools.
Overall, these scholarships have allowed me to direct my attention to activities I want to pursue, both for the experience and for my resume, while not worrying about finances.”
Sebastian E. Lopez Cal Poly ’25
“Receiving a scholarship has been extremely impactful on myself and my family. Any sort of support on tuition makes a difference when it comes to funding my education. I feel lucky to have been chosen as a recipient and can’t thank the donors or Phi Delt enough for the positive impact they have had on me. I hope to see members in my chapter benefit the same way I have from this scholarship and continue to demonstrate what it means to be a Phi.”
Noah Schweitzer CU Boulder ’25

“From the high price of college tuition to living expenses to less realized tools like a computer or books; These scholarships have not only helped me, but also my family as I continue to embark on this great college journey. Also with being a first generation student, the Fraternity has been a great resource from tips and tricks to even big brothers helping me map out college since I was a freshman. I am truly thankful for all of the scholarships and blessings that I have received in order to continue reaching and surpassing my educational goals.”
Shanon Jackson II Akron ’26

For many first-generation college students, the journey through higher education is filled with ambition, hard work, and financial challenges. Coleton Brice Geibel, a student at the Pennsylvania State University Smeal College of Business, embodies this spirit as he pursues a degree in accounting while balancing leadership roles and community involvement. Thanks to the generosity of Phi Delta Theta’s First-Generation Student Scholarship, Coleton is one step closer to achieving his academic and professional dreams.
A dedicated student and leader, Coleton is actively involved in the Penn State Society of Accountants and VITA, a student-run organization that provides free tax preparation services and financial literacy education to low-income individuals. Beyond his academic commitments, he is also playing a pivotal role in rebuilding the Pennsylvania Theta Chapter of Phi Delta Theta, reinforcing the fraternity’s values of Friendship, Sound Learning, and Rectitude.
“I have high aspirations of being a leader, entrepreneur, and a man of upstanding values,” Coleton shares. “This scholarship has helped relieve financial stress, allowing me to focus on my education, leadership roles, and the dream of one day owning my own gym—a place built on strength, growth, and a positive mental attitude.”

For Coleton and his family, this scholarship represents more than just financial assistance—it is a testament to hard work, resilience, and the support of the Phi Delta Theta brotherhood.
“One motto I carry with me, passed down from my grandfather, is that nothing is given, but earned,” Coleton reflects. “I am proud to have earned this scholarship, and even more proud to call myself a Phi.”
Phi Delta Theta’s First-Generation Student Scholarship ensures that ambitious young men like Coleton have the support they need to break barriers, pursue their dreams, and make a lasting impact—both in their communities and within the fraternity.

Dear Brothers and Friends,
There are years that move the needle, and then there are years that redefine what’s possible. Thanks to your belief in the mission of Phi Delta Theta and your unwavering support of the Foundation, 2024 was a truly historic year. Together, we achieved more, gave more, and impacted more students and chapters than ever before in our history.
We awarded the largest amount of scholarship and grant support in the Foundation’s lifetime, a powerful statement about the role our brotherhood plays in building access and opportunity. Whether it was easing the financial burden of tuition or helping fund educational experiences that shape young leaders, your generosity made a difference where it mattered most.
On Giving Tuesday, Phi Delta Theta once again led the fraternal world, claiming the title of Interfraternal Giving Champion for the second year in a row. It wasn’t just a win—it was a reflection of the pride, unity, and ambition that define our brotherhood. Hundreds of alumni, undergraduates, and friends joined together to show that Phi Delts don’t just talk about impact, we deliver it.
These milestones weren’t achieved by accident. They were the result of a growing, energized community of brothers who believe that our values—Friendship, Sound Learning, and Rectitude—deserve to be lived out, scaled up, and passed on.
As you explore the stories and achievements in this year’s report, I hope you feel the same sense of pride that we do. Because every dollar raised, every scholarship awarded, every leadership opportunity funded—it all began with you.
Thank you for investing in the future of Phi Delta Theta. Let’s carry this momentum forward as we continue
Gratefully, Yours in the Bond,

In fall 2024, he was honored to receive the Jack S. Kitchen Scholarship, an award that has allowed him to pursue high-level research and engage more deeply with both his studies and fraternity.
“This scholarship has significantly impacted me by making it financially feasible to prioritize my academically rigorous schedule and research opportunities,” Benjamin shares. “This past year, I spent a large portion of my time to developing a research project and conference paper that was recently accepted for publication. Without funding from this scholarship, I could not have devoted as much time to this important work.”
Beyond academics, the scholarship has also enabled Benjamin to plan for graduate school and increase his involvement in Phi Delta Theta. He has played an active role in his chapter, particularly in organizing service events at a local food bank, strengthening both the Fraternity’s impact and his own leadership skills.

]]>The Interfraternal Giving Tuesday Challenge is a friendly competition between fraternity foundations to see which organization can rally the most engagement and raise the most for its foundation. Phi Delta Theta accepted the challenge, hoping to reclaim victory and make an even larger impact on the brotherhood.
In twelve hours on December 3, 2024, 650 Phi Delta Theta supporters raised a tremendous $445,861, surpassing our goal of $250,000 for the the Phi Delta Theta Foundation.
To put things in perspective, last year was the Foundation’s first time participating in this challenge. Phi Delt nation came together to raise an outstanding $248,317.34. From that win alone, Phi Delta Theta awarded an additional $78,000 in scholarships in 2024 bringing the total to more than $650,000 in scholarships and graduate fellowships awarded.
This year’s competition brought in an additional $200,000 — just think of the impact your support can make for 2025!
Our efforts outshone other prominent fraternities, including PIKE, Sigma Chi, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Alpha Gamma Rho, and others.
This achievement is not just a victory for Phi Delta Theta; it’s a win for the entire fraternity community, as the Giving Tuesday Challenge raised over $1.88 million to support students across various fraternities. The dollars raised during this campaign will help Phi Delta Theta members, allowing the Phi Delta Theta Foundation to continue its mission of awarding $1 million in student grants and scholarships annually.
A victory like the one we experienced on Giving Tuesday embodies our 2030 vision — to be recognized as North America’s premier fraternal leadership development society. Our brotherhood actively acknowledges this vision and showcases its commitment to this status through philanthropy. Thank you for transmitting the Fraternity greater than it was to you, paving the way for the future of Phi Delta Theta.
This win propels our Foundation forward as we aim to raise $1 million in annual support each year to fund our student brothers’ experience. Your support is still needed to help us meet this goal by the end of the year. If you haven’t supported our mission yet, please consider a donation before December 31.

By addressing the unique challenges these students face, the scholarship has already made a profound impact. To date, $11,200 has been awarded to eight deserving students, positioning them for academic and personal success while contributing to the chapter’s promising future.
Here’s what some of the recipients had to say about the impact of this scholarship:
Coleton B. Geibel, Penn State ’26

Matthew G. Moyer, Penn State ’26
“Coming from a single-parent household, this scholarship has been transformative, allowing me to focus on my academics and extracurriculars, including my role as chapter chaplain. It’s a testament to the power of generosity and commitment to the growth of Phi Delta Theta.”
Pruthvi M. Patel, Penn State ’26

Shaun P. Anderson, Penn State ’25
“This scholarship has lightened the financial burden of affording books and other educational expenses, allowing me to focus on my studies. As a first-generation student, I am grateful for this meaningful support.”
The Pennsylvania Theta First-Generation Scholarship is more than just financial assistance—it is a bridge to opportunity and a foundation for leadership. It symbolizes the Fraternity’s unwavering dedication to empowering its members and fostering an environment where future leaders can thrive.
This Giving Tuesday, all Phi Delts are encouraged to contribute to the Phi Delta Theta Foundation. Your donations support initiatives like the innovative First-Generation Scholarship and the Kleberg Emerging Leaders Institute as well as support every brother nationwide in his pursuit of academic and personal excellence. Together, we can continue building a legacy of generosity, growth, and brotherhood.

]]>The post Volunteer Profile – Mark Brueggeman, Cincinnati ’81 appeared first on Phi Delta Theta.
]]>Once a Phi Delt, always a Phi Delt. The bonds created at the beginning of membership are designed to sustain each person through every stage of life, keeping all connected through peer-to-peer relationships and via valuable mentor/mentee networking and intergenerational sharing of wisdom. Phi Delta Theta prides itself on having an incredible network of dedicated alumni and supporters who dedicate their time to give back to the organization. A lifelong commitment to the Fraternity by volunteers enables members to become the greatest version of themselves.
Meet Mark A. Brueggeman, Cincinnati ’81, a dedicated volunteer with Phi Delta Theta. Mark graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a bachelor of business administration degree in economics and marketing. He is currently on the Board of Trustees for the Phi Delta Theta Foundation.
My fraternity experience started when I pledged Phi Delta Theta in the fall of my sophomore year at the University of Cincinnati. At the prompting of my mother’s best friend, whose son was then president of the Ohio Theta Chapter, I was invited down during recruitment to investigate what fraternity life was all about. At that time, I met some of my future pledge brothers and undergraduates who have remained my lifelong friends. The Ohio Theta Chapter thrived in the late 1970s, and I chose to join Phi Delta Theta because of the Fraternity’s values of Friendship, Sound Learning, and Rectitude. Of course, it didn’t hurt to be the only fraternity with a swimming pool in the backyard!
As I sit in my armchair recovering from knee replacement surgery, I have had time to reflect on what it means to volunteer for my fraternity, Phi Delta Theta. I chose Phi Delta Theta in 1979 and committed to the Fraternity as it has committed to me. The Fraternity offered so many experiences that I would never have had unless I participated fully each time I was afforded these opportunities for involvement. I had nineteen Phikeia brothers in the fall of 1979, and we were all initiated and committed to Phi Delt, which helped develop the bond between all the brothers that continues to this day. The moral support, the personal support, the late-night discussions, the fun, and the sportsmanship all helped us through to graduation and helped set the course for careers across the country. Those bonds provide some of the best memories and friendships that I could ever ask for.
Upon graduating from the University of Cincinnati in 1981, I moved to Houston, Texas, and began working in the petrochemical distribution industry. After a few years, I joined Chevron Corporation, where I worked for almost fifteen years before starting my own petrochemical marketing, logistics, and distribution company. To this day, many doors in my business have opened directly due to my Phi Delt affiliation.
My wife, Elizabeth, was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma at Vanderbilt University, and she encouraged my involvement with Phi Delt, both in fundraising and ultimately in joining the Phi Delta Theta Foundation Board. She was an active board member for her sorority’s local alumnae chapter and its Houston Charitable Foundation for many years. She understands the value of supporting Greek life as an alum with your time, talent, and treasure.
I started my involvement as a Phi Delt Theta volunteer when the Ohio Theta Chapter raised money to build a new chapter house through its Building the Foundation Campaign. Our old house at 2718 Digby had been sold; the chapter had tried to be part of a new University Greek Village, but it was quickly apparent to the alumni that the chapter needed a new chapter house in order to survive and thrive. From Houston, I called Ohio Theta alums of all ages, encouraging them to join in support of the new chapter house, which was ultimately built. Elizabeth and I toured the house soon after it opened, and it is a wonderful place for the Ohio Theta men to gather and live.
My involvement in that building campaign caught the eye of the former senior vice president of advancement, Steve Bloomer, who visited with Elizabeth and me in Houston and shared the Campaign 2030: A Greater Version for Tomorrow vision. Subsequent visits from Steve and Sean Wagner, the current Phi Delta Theta Foundation president, were very motivating! We ultimately chose to support Campaign 2030 because we had been blessed with a successful business and a loving family. We felt that supporting the campaign was a way to give back to the Fraternity that gave me lifelong friendships, leadership opportunities, and social and academic support. The health and safety initiatives were especially appealing to us as parents of three sons who dealt, either personally or through their friends, with issues of alcoholism, drug addiction, depression, and suicide.
In October 2021, I was nominated and elected to join the Phi Delta Theta Foundation Board of Trustees and serve on the Foundation Finance Committee. I am honored to give back to Phi Delta Theta in this way.
Do it! Through my involvement with Phi Delt, I have met many amazing and talented men. I am very impressed by the varied accomplishments of my fellow Foundation Board members and have learned a lot from them.
I would tell them to get involved in their local chapter and take advantage of any and all opportunities that the chapter and/or the national organization offers. Many of my best friends to this day are brothers from Ohio Theta and other chapters I have met over the years. The bond of brotherhood is truly for a lifetime!

]]>The Foundation supports critical programs, scholarships, and so much more. I want to ensure those opportunities continue for decades to come so others can take my place to sustain them long after I’m gone.
Social connections and support are more relevant today than ever before. I would argue that this was proven even more true during the pandemic. Fraternity creates a sense of belonging and purpose to support each other and our communities.
Always be willing to learn. Stretch yourself and take the risk. Don’t take the job just for the money—take it for the opportunity to grow and learn.
Matthew was born and raised in Northern California. He graduated from Sonoma State University in 2003 with a BA in English. After graduation, Matthew’s goal was to teach high school; however, he ended up in a training and development role for a home warranty company based in Santa Rosa, California. Over the past twenty years, Matthew has held various training and development leadership roles. He returned to Sonoma State in 2014 and earned his MBA in 2016. He is the global training operations manager for First American Home Warranty, overseeing training operations for our onshore employees and offshore contract staff in Kenya, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, and Guatemala. Matthew is an avid traveler, having sailed on over twenty cruises, and can speak basic French, Spanish, and Italian.

]]>The post Planning Your End-of-Year Gift to the Phi Delta Theta Foundation appeared first on Phi Delta Theta.
]]>Why Consider Giving Early?
For many, December is the busiest month of the year. By planning ahead, you’ll be able to ensure your gift is well-timed, tax-efficient, and impactful. An early contribution can maximize the support we’re able to extend to our chapters, scholarship funds, leadership development programs, and educational initiatives.
How You Can Give: A Few Options
The Phi Delta Theta Foundation offers various giving options to make your year-end donation both easy and strategic. Here are a few flexible ways you can contribute:
Cash Gifts
A cash gift is one of the simplest ways to give. Cash donations are immediately accessible to the Foundation, allowing us to address critical needs and plan effectively for the future. Your cash donation is also tax-deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law.
Stock Transfers
If you hold appreciated stocks, donating them directly to the Foundation is an effective way to make a significant gift without incurring capital gains taxes. By transferring stock, you can support Phi Delta Theta’s mission while potentially receiving favorable tax benefits. Please consult your financial advisor to explore how this might work for your situation.
IRA Rollovers
For our members aged seventy and one-half or older, IRA rollovers are an excellent way to give. By making a qualified charitable distribution (QCD) directly to the Foundation from your IRA, you can satisfy your required minimum distribution (RMD) without it being counted as taxable income. This option not only benefits the Foundation but also offers significant tax advantages.
Other Giving Options
We also accept contributions through Donor-Advised Funds (DAFs), matching gifts from your employer, and estate planning arrangements. Each of these methods can amplify your support for the Foundation and help secure a lasting legacy for Phi Delta Theta.
Give Now and Join Us for the Interfraternal Giving Tuesday Challenge
On Tuesday, December 3, Phi Delta Theta is defending our title in the Interfraternal Giving Tuesday Challenge—we need your help! Your early gift today counts toward our participation! This year, Phi Delta Theta is competing against more organizations—SAE, Sigma Chi, and PIKE to name a few. By making a gift now, you’re joining a powerful movement to show the collective strength of our brotherhood.
Your early gift not only helps us stand out in this friendly challenge but also positions us to access matching gifts and special incentives. Last year, thanks to our Giving Tuesday donors, we were able to give out an additional $78,000 in scholarships. Imagine the impact we can achieve together by pooling our contributions!
How to Make Your Gift
We’ve made it easier than ever to give. You can make your gift online or contact our team directly to explore specific giving options that work best for you.
Join us in sustaining the legacy of our great Fraternity by considering your end-of-year contribution today. Every gift counts and brings us closer to a future where Phi Delta Theta continues to thrive.
Thank you for your dedication, and for making a meaningful difference in the lives of your brothers. We’re grateful for your support.

]]>On top of that, I couldn’t turn to my parents for advice because they hadn’t experienced college. I was looking for a fresh start, eager to prove to my family that college was the right path for me. Before arriving on campus, I had expressed interest in joining a fraternity. Despite seeing portrayals of Greek life in the media, I wanted to experience it for myself. After being stuck in my hometown during COVID, I craved a sense of community. My college, a small Division II private school an hour away from home, had three fraternities and three sororities. One of my first memorable interactions was with my dorm’s RA, who happened to be the president of Phi Delt. He gave me a tour of not just the campus but also the surrounding area, and the members of Phi Delt welcomed me with open arms. It was refreshing to feel like I could be myself without having to pretend to be someone else. The Fraternity’s members were all unique, with different personalities and quirks, but it worked—and I knew I wanted to do more than just be a member.
I took on the role of secretary since I had a similar experience in high school and managed the chapter’s social media. One of my personal missions was to share my faith with my brothers in the chapter, so I also took the chaplain role. Finances were always on my mind as a first-generation student, so I eventually quit my fast-food job because it conflicted with the chapter’s needs. Fortunately, I landed a job as a student ambassador and gave tours for the university in the spring semester, which was better for balancing my schedule. Around this time, I was also offered a position on the Interfraternity Council, which broadened my understanding of fraternity life on campus. As I was growing within Phi Delt, my university was also evolving, transitioning to Division I and joining the Ohio Valley Conference. Looking back, I realized that going to college was an incredible opportunity—a chance that I wasn’t going to waste. That summer, I was invited to attend the Kleberg Emerging Leaders Institute as part of the chaplain’s track, and I was among the first group ever to participate. The experience opened my eyes to how impactful Phi Delt truly is. Over time, I earned more scholarships and took on different roles. And qualified for the honors college track, and by my senior year, I became a peer mentor. Now, as I reflect on everything, I’m deeply grateful for the opportunities Phi Delt has given me. I also aim to be an active advocate for fraternity life at universities.
Phi Delta Theta outpaces both averages irrespective of whether a student is a first- or continuing-generation student.* The past three years, Phi Delta Theta freshmen have returned to campus for a sophomore year 99 percent of the time, whether first-generation or not. Compare this to the national average. According to the Center for First-Generation Student Success, 81 percent of first-generation students return to school for a sophomore year, compared to 87 percent continuing generation students.
* A first-generation college student is defined as a student who has not had a parent or guardian complete a four-year degree. A continuing-generation student is a student who has a parent or guardian who has completed a four-year degree.

* A first-generation college student is defined as a student who has not had a parent or guardian complete a four-year degree. A continuing-generation student is a student who has a parent or guardian who has completed a four-year degree.
In 2020, the Phi Delta Theta Foundation Board of Trustees approved an initiative to fund $1,000,000 in first-generation new member scholarships over four years. Since then, 560 individuals from 157 chapters have received a first-generation new member scholarship: that’s 84 percent of eligible chapters! These scholarships are available to new members in their first year of membership and are first-generation college students.

First-generation college students have a median household income that is less than 50 percent of their continuing-generation peers. This scholarship serves as a bridge to membership for those needing extra support during their first year. Students have shared that this scholarship allowed them to work fewer hours to spend more time studying, buy books needed for their classes, and take research trips, to name a few. While scholarships cannot pay directly for fraternity membership, they are offsetting the investment students are making in their commitment and exposure to an organization that can directly improve their social mobility through a values-based experience.
Primarily due to financial challenges, navigating unfamiliar environments, and a lack of on-campus mentorship, retention and graduation rates for first-generation college students are significantly lower than for students with parents who attended college.

“This scholarship not only alleviates some of the financial pressures associated with my studies but also motivates me to keep pushing through.”
Izaiah Acosta, UW-Whitewater ’24
Phi Delta Theta’s work includes understanding the makeup of the Fraternity’s undergraduate membership. Being transparent about our undergraduate member demographics has facilitated valuable conversations and impactful decision-making. It also led to a focus on attracting first-generation students to our organization.

“I am dedicated to making the most out of this opportunity, determined to use my education to create a positive influence in my community and beyond. Your support not only has unlocked doors for me but has also ignited my enthusiasm for ongoing learning and personal development.”
Bryce Wiginton, West Texas A&M ’25
Through our partnership with Dyad Strategies, we know that first-generation college students are less likely to prioritize the social aspects of the Fraternity and have different life experiences and perspectives. On average, they work twenty or more hours per week, pay their own dues, and need financial assistance. We also learned that their views are more inclusive, promote further diversification, and help our chapters focus on leadership and philanthropy, ensuring a better and healthier experience for all.

Dear Brothers, Parents, and Friends,
It has now been three years since Phi Delta Theta Fraternity and Foundation launched our initiative to expand opportunities for first-generation student members. As we reflect on the progress made, I am thrilled to share the incredible achievements and outcomes that have come from these efforts, which have far exceeded our expectations.
Through careful monitoring and evaluation of both first-generation students and their continuing-generation peers, we’ve gained invaluable insights. The data confirms that our first-generation members are not just participating in our leadership programs; they are excelling. These brothers are demonstrating exceptional leadership potential early in their fraternity experience. For instance, first-generation new members are 50 percent more likely to become officers within their first year of membership compared to their peers. This speaks volumes about their drive and the effectiveness of our leadership training. Furthermore, 38 percent of our 2024 first-generation scholarship recipients have assumed officer roles in their first year. Additionally, nearly 20 percent of scholarship recipients have attended a milestone leadership conference like McKenzie or Kleberg, further solidifying their leadership journey.
These statistics are more than just numbers. They highlight the profound impact Phi Delta Theta is having on these students. Not only are they rising to leadership positions within our chapters, but they are also thriving academically and socially. Our data shows that first-generation members are 18 percent more likely to remain enrolled at their institution beyond their first year compared to their first-generation peers outside the Fraternity. This is a testament to the supportive community, personal growth, and opportunities for development that Phi Delta Theta provides.
What does this mean for the broader fraternity experience? It means that our first-generation members are contributing significantly to the strength and vitality of our chapters. Their presence enhances the overall brotherhood, bringing diverse perspectives and experiences that benefit all members, especially as they assume leadership roles. Moreover, these programs are not only advancing the individual growth of these members but also contributing to the overall retention rates of first-generation students at their universities—a powerful, positive outcome for both the Fraternity and higher education institutions alike.
Looking ahead, we are energized by the progress we’ve seen and eagerly anticipate even greater achievements in the coming years. We are especially excited to follow the careers of our first-generation scholarship recipients as our first class of recipients enter the workforce next year. These young men are the future leaders in their communities and industries, and we take pride in knowing that Phi Delta Theta has played a pivotal role in their development.
As always, none of this would be possible without your unwavering support. Whether through financial contributions, mentorship, or involvement, you have helped make this program a resounding success. We are incredibly grateful for your continued dedication to advancing our mission. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or wish to learn more about how you can further support our initiatives.
Thank you again for your generosity and belief in the potential of our first-generation members.
Humbly and proud to be a Phi!

]]>By Katie Rufener, Senior Director of Annual Giving and Advancement Communications
In the vast network of Phi Delta Theta alumni, some members stand out not just for their dedication during their undergraduate years but for their continued support and commitment to the fraternity long after they’ve graduated. One such exemplary brother is Rocky Kmiecik, Davison ’85, a name synonymous with passion, leadership, and unwavering support for the Phi Delta Theta Foundation.
When asked about his motivation to support the Phi Delta Theta Foundation, Rocky’s response was filled with enthusiasm and a deep sense of responsibility. “I support the Foundation because it’s an awesome way to give back!” he exclaimed. For Rocky, the Foundation isn’t just an entity; it is the bedrock that ensures the longevity and vitality of Phi Delta Theta and the young men who are part of it. “The Foundation is ensuring the future of Phi Delta Theta and the young men that become our brothers for life. Without the giving from alumni, the Fraternity just couldn’t run or maintain the programs it runs at the levels it currently does. Giving to the Foundation is giving towards the future for all of us!”
This sentiment reflects Rocky’s understanding of the critical role that alumni contributions play in sustaining Phi Delt’s mission. His support is a testament to his belief that the values and lessons imparted by Phi Delta Theta are as relevant today as ever.
“Phi Delta Theta is absolutely relevant today—even more so than when I was an undergrad!” Rocky emphasizes. In a world that is constantly evolving, the Fraternity’s programs provide young men with the tools they need to succeed in both their personal and professional lives. For Rocky, Phi Delta Theta’s teachings are timeless, preparing its members for the challenges of the future while fostering lifelong friendships. “The world would be a much better place if everyone could go through such a great learning experience coupled with the bonds of friendship for life,” he adds.
Rocky Kmiecik’s connection to Phi Delta Theta has only deepened over the years. “I think I’m getting even more out of Phi Delta Theta now than I did in my youth,” he reflects. For him, the Fraternity is more than just a college experience; it’s a lifelong journey of growth, learning, and camaraderie. “These young men that I see joining our Fraternity give me genuine hope for the future of our nation. Every interaction I learn more, and it’s comforting to know that my Brothers will always be there for me.”
This enduring bond and the continued learning that comes with it are what keep Rocky engaged and active in the Fraternity’s community. His interactions with current members have only strengthened his belief in Phi Delt’s mission and its positive impact on society.
As a seasoned participant in both the Kleberg Emerging Leaders Institute and the McKenzie Family Presidents Leadership Conference, Rocky Kmiecik has experienced firsthand the transformative power of these programs. “Just seeing the caliber of education that our Brothers receive at these events can easily convince you to support the Foundation,” he asserts.
Rocky speaks highly of the rigor and intensity of these programs, noting that they are not for the faint of heart. “Both events are first-class learning experiences. And trust me, they are serious about the teaching model with LONG days of full schedules. There’s no slack time there!” His dedication to these programs is evident as he expresses his commitment to attending future events and even aspires to contribute as a faculty member at the next Kleberg.
For Rocky, these leadership conferences are more than just educational opportunities; they are vital in shaping the future leaders of Phi Delta Theta and, by extension, the wider community. His advice to fellow brothers? “If you haven’t been, you need to contact the Foundation Staff ASAP and see if they can schedule you—you won’t be disappointed.”
Rocky Kmiecik’s story is one of dedication, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to the values of Phi Delta Theta. His contributions, both in time and resources, are paving the way for future generations of brothers to thrive. As a shining example of what it means to be a lifelong Phi, Rocky’s support ensures that the Fraternity remains a relevant and transformative force in the lives of its members for years to come.
For those considering ways to give back, Rocky’s journey serves as a powerful reminder that every contribution, no matter the size, plays a crucial role in sustaining the legacy and future of Phi Delta Theta.

]]>Mateo Portelli is a first-generation college student currently pursuing a BA in history with a minor in military science at UNLV. He began his military career in 2020 when he enlisted in the US Army and aspires to become a signal or cyber officer. His ultimate goal is to honor his family by achieving the rank of colonel.
As a dedicated member of Phi Delta Theta, Mateo has embraced the Fraternity’s core values—Friendship, Sound Learning, and Rectitude—not just in his chapter but in every aspect of his life. Whether he’s serving his country, shaping policies, or guiding the next generation of Phi Delts, Mateo is driven by a deep commitment to lead with integrity, compassion, and a desire to create a better future.
Leadership is a big part of who Mateo is. As a former chaplain and the current alumni engagement chair for his chapter, he’s always been focused on helping his brothers grow and succeed. He believes that true leadership is about lifting others up and making sure their voices are heard. His time in Phi Delta Theta has taught him that leaders don’t just give orders—they support, inspire, and lead by example.
“My vision for the future encompasses a broader goal of serving the community and continuing to be an active and contributing member of Phi Delta Theta. Whether it’s through mentoring future members or contributing to policy that affects the lives of many, my goal is to make a difference.”
Mateo Portelli, UNLV ’25
Mateo’s commitment to education is just as strong as his dedication to service. Throughout college he has balanced three jobs while keeping up with school and Phi Delta Theta. His experience in the army has only strengthened his time management skills, teaching him discipline and the importance of staying focused on the bigger picture.
Even as Mateo advances in his career, his bond with Phi Delta Theta remains strong. In 2023, Mateo became the first Iron Phi from Nevada Beta. Mateo is also a First-Generation Student Scholarship recipient and Robert J. Miller Scholarship recipient. After graduation, he plans to stay involved with his chapter by serving on the chapter advisory board and helping future brothers succeed. He’s already thinking about how he can give back financially to help others.
The Valor Scholarship is just one of the Phi Delta Theta Foundation’s hundreds of scholarships. Students pursuing an undergraduate degree should complete an undergraduate scholarship application in myPhiDelt before April 1 to be considered for scholarships for 2025-2026. Students pursuing a graduate degree should complete a graduate scholarship application in myPhiDelt before May 31 to be considered for a 2025-2026 fellowship award. Given to the Fraternity in 1980 by Brothers James J. Nance, Ohio Wesleyan 1923, and Dr. John D. Millett, DePauw ’33, the Nance-Millett Free Enterprise Award recognizes a Phi who has made an outstanding contribution to the free enterprise system. This year, Phi Delta Theta recognized Brother Gary Norcross, Arkansas ’87, as the 2024 recipient of the Nance-Millett Award.

In 2010, Phi Delta Theta launched Iron Phi. This program provides members with an opportunity to make a significant contribution to the battle against Lou Gehrig’s disease. To accomplish this, they must complete an athletic challenge and raise a minimum of $1,000 from their family and friends. Over 2,240 Phi Delts and friends have successfully become Iron Phis, raising a total of $4.54 million. Every year at Kleberg, several Phis begin their Iron Phi journey by running a 5K to raise awareness for ALS. This year’s Iron Phi 5K had over 180 participants!

Each year, Phi Delta Theta brings significant support to the City of Oxford during the Kleberg Emerging Leaders Institute, particularly through the conference’s uptown lunch program. This year, our students contributed to the local economy by enjoying a total of 1,560 meals at Oxford’s beloved local restaurants. Skipper’s restaurant was a Phi favorite, serving 239 meals over the two days, followed closely by OxVegas Chicken, a newcomer with 235 meals. Sohi wasn’t far behind, with 225 meals served. This strong turnout demonstrates our commitment to supporting Oxford’s local businesses and fostering a positive relationship between the fraternity and local communities.

This year, attendees had the unique opportunity to step back in time with an exclusive tour of the Founders Room in Elliott Hall. This historic site is where the Immortal Six of Phi Delta Theta came together on December 26, 1848, to establish the Fraternity. Walking through the very room where our brotherhood began allowed attendees to connect deeply with our rich history, gaining a profound appreciation for the legacy that continues to inspire us today.
This year, at Shaffer Honors College of Leadership, seventy exemplary undergraduate members were awarded the prestigious Whole Man Scholarship, totaling $88,602.31 in scholarships. These scholarships not only recognized their achievements but also provided them with the opportunity to attend the Shaffer Honors College of Leadership, held concurrently with the Kleberg Emerging Leaders Institute in Oxford, Ohio. The Shaffer Honors College is a 400-Level Leadership Experience where recipients have the unique privilege of learning from accomplished Phi Delt alumni and volunteers, gaining insights that will shape their future leadership journeys.

A challenge was set during the conference to see which small group chapter could gain the most new Knights of Pallas members, and the response was inspiring. Through gifts of $18.48 or more, undergraduates can become a Knights of Pallas member. Dollors raised through Knights of Pallas contribute to programming and scholarships that strengthen the brotherhood. At this year’s Kleberg Emerging Leaders Institute, 213 students demonstrated their commitment to the Phi Delta Theta Foundation by contributing a remarkable $4,453.77 to the Knights of Pallas program.

]]>The Phi Delta Theta Foundation exists to strengthen men for life by building on the tradition of our core values: Friendship, Sound Learning and Rectitude. The Foundation grants $1 million annually in scholarships, fellowships, and educational grants to help Phis on their pursuit of greatness.
Meet Walt Morris, Mississippi State ’22, a dedicated supporter of the Phi Delta Theta Foundation. Walt is a member of the Young Alumni Trustees Roundtable, a giving society for graduates within the last ten years and undergraduates. These Phis are welcomed into the Trustees’ Roundtable when they give $100 for each year since they have graduated. By supporting the Phi Delta Theta Foundation, Walt carries his legacy to future generations of Phis, so that they can experience the same transformative opportunities that helped shape his own Phi Delta Theta journey.
I have been fortunate to experience and see what Phi Delta Theta offers and what the organization is about at all levels. The most memorable moments were probably at my home chapter, Mississippi Beta, at Mississippi State University, and at what we call Final Roll Call. Every year, my chapter holds a final meeting just after classes end but before the final exam study days start. All members are expected to attend this meeting and remain there until the end. This was our chapter’s final sendoff to all of the seniors in the chapter. This was a night in their honor where everyone got to say their final well wishes and the seniors could impart their final words of wisdom to those coming up in the chapter after them. We started right after dinner and, in descending order by Bond number, allowed every member to say what they had in their heart to the seniors and the chapter as a whole. This went on well into the early hours of the next day, but nobody complained. I loved Phi Delta Theta from the beginning, but at my first Final Roll Call, I remember feeling all thoughts of what life may have been like had I pledged to another fraternity fade away. Throughout the night, I saw how much the organization and the connections forged at the chapter meant to each member. Every year that I was at Mississippi Beta, we repeated the tradition, and each year, I saw another display of what Phi Delta Theta’s promise of brotherhood meant to our members. It was a heartwarming and emotional experience that I looked forward to annually.
I would not change anything. I truly feel like I got the optimal experience from my membership and would not have wanted anything different. I wish more people could have a similar experience as I did.
Phi Delta Theta made a difference in my life and is the organization to which I attribute a large part of my success so far. My time as a member of Phi Delta Theta allowed me to develop into the man I am today. Because of my experience in Phi Delta Theta, I developed many of the skills I used in undergrad and still use today at my job and in life. In the chapter, I served as the chapter’s awards chairman, vice president, and president. I was supported by the chapter in my positions on campus as a member of the University’s Honor Code Council and Student Conduct Board, the Director of Academic Affairs and the Interfraternity Council Senate Representative in campus student government, and as a leader of many other organizations on campus. Phi Delta Theta has always been an organization that has helped cultivate leaders and make its members the greatest version of themselves. I believe that Phi Delta Theta delivered on that promise in my case. Through Phi Delta Theta, I have met the men I now regard as brothers, and that has had lasting impacts on my life, so I would not trade for anything.
I recommend that anyone given the opportunity to attend one of these conferences take it. Phi Delta Theta is known for its outstanding leadership development programs and instructional material; there is much to be gained from these events. All three of these conferences allow members to gain insight into what the international organization is like, and they allow you to leave feeling connected to something larger than yourself and with brilliant ideas to take back to your chapter. In my first year as a Phi, my attendance at Kleberg allowed me to connect with other chapters from across the country and develop new ideas that I later implemented as a leader of my home chapter. McKenzie directly supports already elected members of their chapters and allows these leaders access to a wealth of additional knowledge/guidance. At the same time, they develop higher-level goals for their chapter and the action plans to complete these goals. Upon leaving convention, I felt prepared for my new role as the chapter president and was introduced to many contacts I later used to navigate difficult situations. Meeting other chapter presidents also allowed me to have a group to bounce future ideas off of. General Convention allows you to see more of the governing side of the Fraternity and learn about many of the organization’s strategic goals. These opportunities allowed me to become a better leader and fully understand what Phi Delta Theta is on an international level.
I am most proud that I have reached a point so early in life where things are already starting to come together. I am thankful for the job opportunity I have been given working for Northrop Grumman in Utah as an engineer (which I was in part aided in getting by recommendation letters from fellow Phis). I am thankful for the relationships I have developed and maintained with my chapter brothers over the years. I am probably most proud of my relationship with my fiancée as she has supported me in many things in life, including moving to Utah for my job, my continued involvement as the chapter advisory board chairman of Mississippi Beta, and my recent decision to work towards a master’s while working full-time.

In her five years at Phi Delta Theta, she has facilitated the growth of the Phi Delt Fund from $450,000 to $1 million annually. This annual growth is attributed to expanded member knowledge of the Foundation’s purpose and the implementation of an annual giving day which focuses on expanding impact for the year.

Todd Simmons joins the Phi Delta Theta Foundation’s staff after serving for five years on the Fraternity staff. Todd most recently served as the director of member success on the membership development and support team, where he created and implemented the new chapter accreditation program.
As the advancement and engagement officer, Todd identifies, qualifies, cultivates, solicits, and stewards annual and major gifts from alumni, parents, and friends. His responsibilities include managing a portfolio of prospects, participating in all aspects of the gift cycle, focusing on securing support for Fraternity educational programs and scholarships, Trustees’ Roundtable Society, and Living Bond Society.

In mid-December of 2021, Bonnie became full-time to the Phi Delta Theta Foundation advancement services team with the goal of maximizing the Foundation’s impact on Phi Delt students. Bonnie returns to the Foundation as the Scholarship and Impact Coordinator. Bonnie has facilitated the two most significant impact years for the Phi Delta Theta Foundation, including $1 million dollars in grants and scholarships for the first time in 2022. Sara Foulk has served as the administrative specialist with Phi Delta Theta since July 2023. A lifelong resident of Oxford, Sara was born and raised there. The Phi Delta Theta Foundation is proud to announce our remarkable fundraising effort of $3.36 million raised in 2023. This achievement reflects the generous support and dedication of our community, empowering us to continue our mission of fostering academic excellence and leadership development.
Demonstrating our value of Sound Learning, the Phi Delta Theta Foundation is thrilled to have granted $1.69 million in scholarships and education funds. These resources directly impact the lives of deserving students, providing them with opportunities to pursue their academic aspirations and fulfill their potential.

With gratitude, we acknowledge the invaluable contributions of our 4,546 donors. Their unwavering generosity has been instrumental in driving our success, enabling us to make a meaningful difference in the lives of countless individuals.

In 2023, the Phi Delta Theta Foundation proudly introduced nine new scholarships and chapter leadership funds, further expanding our support for students and chapters. These initiatives reflect our ongoing commitment to empowering future leaders.

For the second consecutive year, the Phi Delta Theta Foundation has achieved an extraordinary $1 million impact. This milestone shows our continued growth and effectiveness in advancing our philanthropic goals, ensuring that we can continue to make a significant difference in the lives of our members and communities.

We are thrilled to announce that the Phi Delta Theta Foundation has been ranked #1 in scholarship dollars awarded among fraternal foundations. This recognition, given by the Foundation for Fraternal Excellence, is a testament to our dedication to academic excellence and our relentless pursuit of empowering students to achieve their highest potential.

Dear brothers and friends,
I am honored to share the remarkable progress the Phi Delta Theta Foundation accomplished in 2023. We are thrilled to announce that we awarded over $1 million in educational grants and scholarships to our members for the second consecutive year, marking a historic milestone for the Foundation that is a testament to donors’ generous and building support for the last sixty-five years.
I am deeply grateful for your unwavering support of Phi Delta Theta, which has enabled us to achieve goals that once seemed impossible. Our research revealed that the Foundation’s first Board of Directors in the 1960s hoped to eventually award two Phis a $1,000 scholarship annually.
Twenty years after the Foundation Board established that goal and was flourishing, the Board successfully petitioned the IRS to be allowed to grant scholarships and use funds raised to grant monies for educational programming. At that time, the goal was to support the Fraternity for the chapter consultant program.
Now, with your help, we have far surpassed that goal. Our educational programming has flourished beyond the initial objective of supporting the Fraternity’s chapter consultant program. In 2023, we granted $622,869 in scholarships, the most of any fraternity foundation. We provided $659,782 in support for various programs, including the Kleberg Emerging Leaders Institute, Shaffer Honors College of Leadership, Ihlenfeld Online University, and McKenzie Family Presidents Leadership Conference. Phi Delta Theta granted more educational scholarships than any other fraternity foundation in 2023, and we are looking to do it again in 2024, thanks to your support.
In 2023, the record-breaking support for our Phi Delt Fund of over $1.1 million and additional dollars totaling $3.4 million inspired by all aspects of our brotherhood. This included hundreds of donors rallying around the Fraser Family to honor our fallen Michigan Beta Chapter President Brian Fraser, who turned tragedy into triumph by establishing two scholarships in his name. Our donors also celebrated their lifelong commitment to the Fraternity and competitive spirit by competing against one another in our record-breaking Giving Day and beating all other Fraternities in the Giving Tuesday competition we won in our first year of participation.
I invite you to read the stories of these efforts, our students, and fellow donors and reflect on your positive impact on their lives. Your commitment to Phi Delta Theta Fraternity has enabled us to fulfill our mission of advancing the education of our members, and for that, we are eternally grateful.
Gratefully, Yours in the Bond,

Sean S. Wagner, President

]]>The Arthur R. Priest award is the Foundation’s most prestigious scholarship and is awarded to the undergraduate member who scores the highest based on merit and exemplary character.
Dominic is an honors student majoring in sports business with a marketing minor and plans to pursue a professional selling certificate. He hopes to work for a professional sports organization in a marketing or operations department.
He maintained the Cardinal Principles of Phi Delta Theta as his chapter’s vice president.
How has your leadership style adapted while in college and Phi Delta Theta?
During my collegiate years, I experienced a significant enhancement in my leadership abilities, partly due to my involvement with Phi Delta Theta. Serving as vice president, new member educator, and Iron Phi coordinator, I nurtured a skill set that proved invaluable beyond the Fraternity’s walls. My initiative to establish the Student Analytics and Business Association (SABA) was a direct application of the leadership prowess I cultivated within Phi Delta Theta. This growth has instilled confidence in my ability to steer and manage organizations, an asset I am certain will serve me well in my professional life post-graduation.
You’ve attended Kleberg and General Convention. What would you tell younger Phis about these opportunities?
The privilege of attending both Kleberg and General Convention afforded me rich networking opportunities and exposed me to a wealth of diverse perspectives and ideas. These experiences have equipped me to contribute innovative strategies for improving my home chapter. I would encourage every Phi to experience one of these events at least once within their collegiate career.
Who’s a Phi you’d like to thank?
None of my achievements within Phi Delta Theta or on campus would have been possible without the support of my brother, Andrew Martin. More than a brother, he was a roommate and a beacon of leadership. His tenure as president during my vice presidency was inspirational. The esteem he commanded and his dedication set a benchmark for the type of leader I aspired to become. My gratitude is boundless for all the cherished memories, advice, and unwavering motivation he has provided. Andrew exemplifies the quintessence of a true Phi, and I am forever thankful for that.
“As vice president of Ohio Epsilon, I’m constantly leading by example and setting a positive tone for the Fraternity. Showing up to meetings and events on time, taking initiative, and demonstrating a strong work ethic. In addition, I like to hold myself and others accountable for meeting the expectations set forth by the executive board. I work with other executive board members to establish clear goals and expectations for the Fraternity and communicate these goals to the rest of the members to ensure everyone understands what it means to be a member of Ohio Epsilon. By demonstrating effective leadership as vice president, I can help create a positive and inclusive environment for members and ensure the sustainability and longevity of achieving our goals.
I will uphold Friendship by fostering strong relationships with my colleagues and teammates, showing genuine interest in their lives, and supporting them in their personal and professional endeavors. I will encourage a positive and inclusive workplace culture by treating everyone respectfully and creating opportunities for team building and social activities. I will uphold Sound Learning by continuously seeking to improve my skills and knowledge through professional development opportunities, such as attending conferences and training sessions. Recommending others to explore learning opportunities and share my knowledge and expertise with my colleagues. Finally, I will uphold Rectitude by setting a high ethical standard for myself and my organization by adhering to the values of honesty, integrity, and fairness. I will also hold myself and others accountable for their actions and work to promote a culture of transparency and trust. I would also like to be heavily involved in the alumni club to give future Phi Delts donations and knowledge that I have received from the current alumni club. Overall, by embodying the Cardinal Principles of Phi Delta Theta, I can positively impact my workplace and contribute to the success of my future professional sports organization.”
Please join Phi Delta Theta in congratulating Dominic on this achievement and wishing him the best in his future endeavors!
The Foundation’s goal is to award $10,000 annually to an exceptional student with this scholarship. You can contribute to this goal or any scholarship award by visiting https://phideltatheta.org/donate/

]]>The Interfraternal Giving Tuesday Challenge is a friendly competition between fraternity foundations to see which organization can rally the most engagement and raise the most for its foundation. For the first time, Phi Delta Theta accepted the challenge. In twelve hours, Phi Delta Theta brothers raised an outstanding $248,317.34, surpassing our initial goal of $150,000. Our efforts outshone other prominent fraternities, including PIKE, Sigma Chi, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Alpha Gamma Rho, Phi Psi, Kappa Delta Rho, and Theta Chi.
This achievement is not just a victory for Phi Delta Theta; it’s a win for the entire fraternity community, as the Giving Tuesday Challenge raised over $1 million to support students across various fraternities. The dollars raised during this campaign will help Phi Delta Theta members, allowing the Phi Delta Theta Foundation to continue meeting its mission of giving out $1 million a year in student grants and scholarships.
